Bearer holds both MD and PhD from UCSF. After residency and fellowships she was recruited to Brown University as a tenure-track professor. In 2009 she joined University of New Mexico as teh Harvey Family Endowed Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Dept of Pathology. Her work focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of intracellular transport with emphasis on those processes that when abnormal cause disease. She discovered the cellular link between herpes virus and amyloid precursor protein (APP), and how interactions between virus and APP lead to mal-distribution of APP inside cells, a mechanistic insight into the role of HSV in Alzheimer's disease. |
